Sometimes prepositions are followed by a definite article. In this case, the prepositions di, a, da, in, su join the article to form a single word: an articulated preposition. For example, instead of saying a il ristorante, or da la strada one says al ristorante (‘to the restaurant’) or dalla strada (‘from the street’).

These prepositions take the forms listed below (di+il=del; di+lo=dello; di+l’=dell’, etc.):

N.B. Note that when combined with an article, di becomes de- and in becomes ne-.

Examples:
Uno dei miei amici (One of my friends)   > di + i + miei amici = dei miei amici
I piatti sono sul tavolo (The plates are on the table)   > su + il + tavolo = sul tavolo
Vado all’ aeroporto (I’m going to the airport) > a + l’ + aeroporto = all’ aeroporto

Articulated prepositions have the same function of simple prepositions, though it is not always easy for learners of the Italian language to understand when to use them. The problem is that it is not possible to establish a rule on when to use them, though some patterns can be noticed:

  • Use them with common nouns: dello studente, dal professore, nello zaino, sul tavolo, etc . (N.B. never use them before a name of a city and person).
  • Nouns that take simple prepositions when standing alone (see Unit 6), usually take an articulated preposition when modified. You must use the articulated prepositions  when a noun is accompanied by a definite article + an adjective or a specification like for example in “Sono NELLA biblioteca dell’Università” or “Vado NELLA biblioteca universitaria” meaning respectively :”I am in the library of the University” and “I’m going to the library of the University”. As you can see,in fact, the noun “biblioteca” (library) is accompanied by a specification like “dell’Università” or by an adjective like”universitaria”.

N.B. The other simple prepositions (con, per, tra/fra) can also be followed by an article, but in this case the two words remain separate (con la, per il, fra i, tra le, etc.): con il professore (‘with the professor’), per lo studente (‘for the student’).
