Following is a table with the forms of the demonstrative questo:

Whereas the demonstrative pronouns equivalent to ‘this’ and ‘these’ have only two forms each, one for the masculine and one for the feminine (questo, questi, and questa, queste),  the adjectives present a number of variants depending on the noun that follows:

• questo is used in front of singular masculine nouns or adjectives starting with a consonant: questo cane (‘this dog’), questo libro (‘this book’);
• questa is used in front of singular feminine nouns or adjectives starting with a consonant: questa donna (‘this woman’), questa automobile (‘this car’);
• quest’ is used in front of singular masculine and feminine nouns or adjectives starting with a vowel: quest’uomo (‘this man’), quest’amica (‘this girlfriend’);
• questi and queste are used respectively in front of all masculine and feminine plurals: questi libri (‘these books’), questi uomini (‘these men’), queste automobili (‘these cars’), queste amiche (‘these girlfriends’).

The demonstrative pronouns equivalent to ‘that’ and ‘those’ have respectively two form each, one for the masculine and one for the feminine (quello, quelli and quella, quelle), while the adjectives present a number of variants depending on the noun that follows. The adjective forms quel, quello, quell’, quelli, quei, quegli, quella, and quelle follow a pattern similar to that of the definite article (see 2.4):

• the masculine forms quel (sing.) and quei (pl.) are used in front of nouns or adjectives starting with a consonant (quel gatto ‘that cat’, quei ragazzi ‘those boys’) unless the nouns or adjectives start with s+ cons., z, ps, x, y, sh, and ch. In these cases, quello (sing.) and quegli (pl.) occur: quello studente (‘that student’), quegli zaini (‘those backpacks’). The forms quell’ (sing.) and quegli (pl.) are used in front of vowels or h, that is always silent in Italian: quell’amico (‘that friend’), quell’hotel (‘that hotel’), quegli alberi (‘those trees’);
• the feminine form quella (sing.) is used in front of nouns or adjectives starting with a consonant (quella ragazza ‘that girl’, quella stazione ‘that station’) while quell’ (sing.) is used in front of nouns or adjectives starting with a vowel: quell’automobile (‘that car’), quell’orto (‘that vegetable garden’). There is only one feminine plural form quelle, occuring indistinctly in front of all plural nouns and adjectives: quelle amiche (‘those girlfriends’), quelle belle mele (‘those beautiful apples’).
