Passato prossimo with Avere

When verbs are used in the passato prossimo, some go with the auxiliary avere and some with the auxiliary essere (for essere see Unit 6). *All transitive verbs (verbs that could have a direct object, like mangiare, scrivere, chiamare, etc.) go with avere.

While the first part (present tense of avere) does not change, the past participle (the second part) changes according to the verbs you want to make passato prossimo. For example if you want to make the passato prossimo of :

mangiare you combine io ho, tu, hai, lui ha, etc. and the past participle of mangiare.
credere you combine io ho, tu, hai, lui ha, etc. and the past participle of credere.
sentire you combine io ho, tu, hai, lui ha, etc. and the past participle of sentito.

Few * intransitive verbs as camminare and passeggiare (both to walk), viaggiare (to journey/travel), sciare (to ski) and nuotare  (to swim) go with avere.
