Uses of the Imperfect Tense

Now you are going to learn the second form of past tense in Italian, the imperfetto or the imperfect form. The imperfect  is mainly used to express

ongoing past actions

and habitual actions in the past

In these cases the Italian imperfect corresponds to the English phrases ‘was/were + -ing’ and ‘used to + base form of verb’.

The imperfect is also used to describe the what people, places and thing were like in the past

to indicate physical, physiological and mental states

as well as time, age, and weather in the past

Besides these main uses, the imperfect tense has other applications. It is employed in spoken language instead of the present indicative to make a more polite request: when, for example, one goes to a bar and asks for an ice cream, one never says Voglio un gelato (it would sound rude), but Volevo un gelato (‘I would like an ice cream’).

Some adverbial expressions that are commonly used with the imperfect tense include:

a volte (at times)
continuamente (continuously)
ogni tanto (once in a while)
sempre (always)
solitamente / di solito (usually)
spesso (often)
tutti i giorni (every day)
