Io non sono molto atletico e sono un po’ sovrappeso. Il dottore dice che devo fare sport e  seguire una dieta. Purtroppo non posso più mangiare i dolci (quanto mi piacciono i dolci!), il pane e neppure bere le bevande gassate. Devo invece mangiare molta frutta e verdura e camminare almeno un’ora al giorno. Non è facile, ma sono sicuro che posso riuscire a dimagrire. Voglio dimagrire!
  • Quanto/Come……! are the most common words for exclamation in Italian. They are equivalent to the English ‘how’: Quanto/Come sei forte! (How strong you are!), Quanto/Come è buono il pane! (How good is bread!). They are always used at the beginning of the exclamatory sentence
  • Non….più, with a verb in between (mangio, canto, posso, etc.)  is a fixed expression and translate as no more, no longer: Non insegno più a King College (I no longer teach at King College)
  • Neppure translates as not even (neanche and nemmeno are completely equivalent) and it can only be used in negative contexts: Quando Francesco telefona, non saluta neppure (When Francesco calls, he don’t even say hello)
  • Almeno translates as at least: Almeno tu hai una  casa grande (At least you have a big house)
GRAMMAR

Modal verbs: dovere, potere, and dovere
Three very frequently used verbs in the second conjugation (-ere) are dovere (to have to, must), potere (to be able to, can, may), and volere (to want).

These verbs precede the infinitive of another verb, and indicate respectively necessity, possibility, volition:

Dobbiamo andare a scuola We have to go to school (andare)
Oggi possiamo giocare a calcio Today we can play soccer (giocare)
Voglio uscire con Paolo e Adele  I want to go out with with Paolo and Adele (uscire)

Only the verb  volere can be directly followed by a noun (Io voglio un gelato I want an ice-cream [un gelato]).
